Generation Senior Machine Learning Engineer

The generation department of Luminus plays a critical role in Belgium's energy landscape, with a production capacity of 2135MW. Ensuring the uptime and high performance of our power plants is paramount, and data is at the heart of this mission. We already utilize numerous machine learning models to optimize operations, and this number is expected to grow rapidly.

 

To continue this data-driven journey, we are expanding our Generation Data Science team. This transversal team supports both thermal and wind domain experts, working closely with those on the plant floor: maintenance engineers, performance engineers, asset managers, technical experts and operators. We seek a Senior Machine Learning Engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about applying their expertise to the complex world of electricity production.

 

 

Your daily job

 

  • You design, develop, and deploy robust machine learning models that address the unique challenges of power generation. These models are used to predict equipment failures, optimize maintenance schedules, enhance energy output, and more.
  • You champion MLOps best practices to ensure the long-term sustainability and maintainability of data products. You implement robust monitoring, testing, and deployment pipelines.
  • You work closely with domain experts, engineers, and operators to understand their needs, gather feedback, and deliver solutions that make a meaningful impact on their day-to-day work.
  • You collaborate closely with the IT NEO Data Platform team, leveraging their shared Python packages and workflows to standardize the building and running of ML use cases.
  • You stay abreast of the latest advancements in machine learning and explore emerging technologies, such as multi-agent reinforcement learning, to identify new opportunities for optimization.

 Your profile

 

  • You have a natural understanding and strong interest in the energy domain, with a desire to delve into the complexities of electricity production and its unique challenges.
  • You bring over 5 years of proven experience in industrializing machine learning products, from concept to production.
  • You are fluent in English and Dutch/French, allowing for effective collaboration and communication in multilingual environments
  • You are proficient with AWS cloud services, including S3, Glue, Athena, and Sagemaker.
  • You have demonstrated expertise in Python development, specifically for data science and machine learning.
  • You possess broad knowledge of machine learning frameworks, such as Scikit-learn, XGBoost, PyOD, and Darts, enabling effective implementation of diverse ML solutions.
  • You have strong DevOps experience, including Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Docker containers, ensuring smooth deployment and maintenance of data-driven solutions.
  • Having experience building multi-agent Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) systems is a plus.
  • Bringing demonstrated experience working in industrial environments, preferably within the utility sector is a benefit.
  • Possessing expertise in time series anomaly detection techniques is a valued addition.
  • Experience working with historians, such as Aveva OSIsoft PI is an asset.

1. Infrastructure Design

  • Ensuring compliance with industry standards, security regulations, and best practices.

2. Collaboration with Teams

  • Experience: 2+ years in a similar role designing AWS and on-prem solutions.

Luminus is on a journey to become a more data-driven organization. Over the past three years, we have made significant investments in AI, BI, and data governance to enhance our capabilities. With the emergence of GenAI, Luminus has initiated a corporate program to drive innovation, productivity, and strategic AI integration across operations and decision-making.Our IT department plays a key role in this transformation by supporting a robust Data Platform that powers classical BI, advanced ML, and integration use cases. We are also adopting a "data product" approach to standardize data management and drive business adoption.At Luminus, we operate in an agile environment and are structured within a Release Train to foster efficient collaboration and delivery. As part of a major transformation, our DNA team is growing, with the addition of business-focused scrum teams and two core Data Platform teams.In this context, we are seeking a Scrum Master to guide and support the core Data Platform teams, ensuring agile practices are followed and delivery is efficient, qualitative and aligned with business objectives.

 

The Scrum Master is a servant leader and coach and an IT leading role in the Data&Analytics (DNA) Release Train, together with the Product Owner.The mission of the Scrum Master is to drive Scrum teams to become high-performing, self-organizing teams that deliver quality IT solutions and meet their goals. The Scrum Master fosters collaboration with other teams, manages inter-team dependencies and ensures the smooth delivery of IT initiatives. He/She helps remove impediments and cultivates an environment focused on continuous flow, efficient IT delivery, and relentless improvement.

 

 

Your daily job

Meeting PI Objectives

  • You take ownership to ensure the scrum team’s progress towards team goals. You help the team focus on daily and Sprint Goals in the context of current Program Increment (PI) Objectives, making sure the team can deliver its backlog. (Note: this might include safe guarding specific project milestones that fall within PI)
  • You drive the team delivery by proactively resolving any blockers, ensuring the team stays focused on achieving the Sprint objectives.
  • You guard the quality of delivery – He/She ensures that the Scrum team consistently adheres and meets quality standards (Definition of Done - DoD) before software is shipped to production and guarantees that increments are of the highest quality and aligned with business and technical requirements. Additionally, the Scrum Master supports teams in embedding continuous testing, integration, and validation to uphold delivery excellence across the Agile
  • Release Train (ART).
  • You help the Product Owner and the team in their efforts to manage the backlog and guide the team while facilitating a healthy team dynamic with respect to priorities and scope, including attention to IT specific scope.

Managing scrum team collaboration within a bigger Release Train environment

  • You help prepare the PI planning and breakouts in collaboration with the PO and the program team
  • You protect and communicate –You help protect the team from uncontrolled expansion of work and communicates with management and outside stakeholders on this. In particular, for any additional or unexpected work not planned upfront, the scrum master requests the PO for feature/us creation and re-prioritization
  • You facilitate inter-team collaboration at the release train level and represents the team in the Scrum of Scrums (or similar cross-team forums).

Building a high-performing team

  • You improve team dynamics – You focuse on ever-improving team dynamics and performance. You help the team manage interpersonal challenges and opportunities for growth. You escalate to management where necessary and support team members in their professional development.
  • You help the team improve and take responsibility for their actions - facilitate the team retrospective.
  • You teach problem-solving techniques and help the team become better problem-solvers for themselves, more self-steering.
  • You help the team embrace Agile values, facilitate key meetings and Agile rituals (such as Daily Stand-ups, Sprint Planning, Reviews, and Retrospectives), and ensure alignment with Agile principles and Luminus practices.
  • You drive & help adoption of new techniques to improve flow and quality - the scrum master coaches the team to adopt techniques like test automation, CI/CD, pair programming, performing good demo's and so forth. 

Agile Coach to the wider organization

  • You coach management, leaders, teams and other Scrum Masters in the agile processes and mindsets. Both through day to day evangelization and active participation in the Scrum master COP.

 

 

Your profile

 

  • Solid educational background, preferably in the fields of computer science or engineering.
  • You have extensive experience in Agile methodologies, with a preference for SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework).
  • You have a strong affinity with IT solutions at all levels, with a solid understanding of business contexts and complex IT architectures, including various technologies and systems.
  • You have proven experience in IT delivery, such as testing, release management, and other related areas.
  • You have excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to connect through:

-    Storytelling and impactful presentations-    Sharing knowledge effectively

  • You are a critical thinker who drives process improvements and fosters creativity.
  • Your experience in Data Governance initiatives is a plus.
